Formulating Priority Economic Deliverables, the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs is Ready to Succeed the 2023 ASEAN Chairmanship

Jakarta, January 16th, 2023

The period of Indonesia's Chairmanship in ASEAN with the theme "ASEAN Matter: Epicentrum of Growth" officially started on January 1st 2023, and will end on December 31st 2023. Indonesia focuses on economic priority agendas for handling multidimensional crises, which are translated into 16 Priority Economic Deliverables (PED) and 3 flagship events throughout 2023, while also continuing to strengthen the regional health architecture.

Following the provisions of the ASEAN Charter, the holding of the ASEAN Summit has been arranged two times in one year. Whereas in the last two years, namely during the Chair of Brunei Darussalam (2021) and Cambodia (2022), the ASEAN Summit was held back-to-back considering the Covid-19 pandemic. Along with the improving conditions of Covid-19 in Indonesia and other ASEAN member countries, Indonesia is optimistic about holding the ASEAN Summit again for two times, planned for May 2023 and September 2023.

"The coordination of the economic pillars that we are doing is to ensure that all of these targets can be achieved during the Indonesian Chairmanship," said Deputy for Coordination of International Economic Cooperation Edi Pambudi virtually at the coordination meeting regarding the 2023 ASEAN Economic Pillars, Friday (13/01).

Furthermore, Deputy Edi also emphasized that it is necessary to adjust the timeline for achieving economic priority targets, especially those that will be submitted to the Head of States at the 43rd ASEAN Summit, which is planned to be held in September 2023.

The overall priorities and deliverables of the 2023 Chairmanship can also support and become the implementation of the ASEAN Outlook on Indo-Pacific (AOIP), Indonesia's initiative in responding to dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region. AOIP contains four cooperation areas: connectivity, maritime, sustainable development, and other economic cooperation.

On this occasion, Deputy Edi also conveyed several keys that need to be considered for the success of the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2023, starting from intensive communication with stakeholders to maintaining cohesiveness by mutually supporting and assisting between Ministries/Agencies.

"The ASEAN Chairmanship success is the success our cooperation who handle and be given this task. Let's repeat the 2022 success in 2023," concluded Deputy Edi. (dep7/dft/map/fsr)
